Make Your New Home Last Longer - Home Renovation Guide

Renovations are expensive endeavours. It is therefore logical that you'd want to keep your new home looking and feeling new for longer. But how do you actually go about doing it?

We've put together a quick little home renovation guide on getting your home makeover to stay fresh. We've also included some ID Secret Sauce, little tips and tricks that your Interior Designer don't want you to know!

It Begins With Your Renovation Planning

Believe it or not, what you decide to build into your space will directly impact a home's futureproof-ability. Here are a few things to keep in mind before you engage an Interior Designer.

Ensure Your Avoid Design Fads

Design trends come and go. Trendy and hip things on social media can very quickly fall out of favour. To keep your new space looking timeless, consider using design influences that are evergreen. A good place to start would be to reference minimalist and/or scandinavian design styles.

Selecting Your Materials Wisely

Do clarify with your Interior Designer about the materials that they'd be using. Often, the lowest quotations will cut corners in places that the inexperienced might not be able to catch. A common cost-saving tactic in recent years has been to swap plywood for far less durable OSB. In fairness it is a lot cheaper, fails in a much shorter duration.

But Continues Once You Move In

The work to keep your space fresh really truly starts when you move in. There are little tips and tricks that you can employ to reduce the rate of wear-and-tear. Here are a few that have helped out our homeowners!

Regular Maintenance is Key

Keep your space tidy where possible. Carpentry should not be continuously exposed to high levels of moisture. Countertops should also be maintained, with natural stone needing to be resealed annually. Compact/solid surface tops should never be exposed to high heat - avoid putting hot pans directly on the surface!

Say No To Harsh Cleaning Chemicals

Did you know that even professional cleaners use chemical products sparingly? They are effective at busting stains, but they do so with strong acids/akalines, which can breech and damage your materials overtime. If you have glossy laminates, do use microfibre towels instead of regular ones to minimise the risk of scratches when cleaning.

Get Your Money’s Worth In Your Makeover

Ultimately, your ID's experience and willingness to work WITH you will play a big part in ensuring you have the home of your dreams. There are subtle strategies trained and experienced designers can utilise to stretch your every dollar.

When you do eventually move in, some daily care will also go a very long way to preserving your investment! What other tips and tricks would you like to know? Do let us know by commenting below!
